Bound (MA) 7"

As mentioned in my post of the Soundtrack To The Revolution comp 7" not too long ago, I have been trying to find a copy of the Bound 7" for a while now. And finally with success! Found a copy on the almighty eBay that I managed to scoop up at a damn nice price, and it arrived in my mailbox on the same day as a comment about that same 7" was made in response to the comp 7". Sweet coincidence!

This 7" from 1994 was the first release on Stolnacke Records, a short-lived label mostly known for co-releasing the Converge 'Halo In A Haystack' album. Apart from a demo, this is the only release by Bound from Leominster, Massachusetts. They later renamed themselves Hatchetface, and released an LP. That's about all the info to be found online about this band, I did find another blog that wrote about this 7", but the download no longer works. There's also this Hatchetface interview in Maximum Rock 'n Roll that has some information on Bound. Either way, this is damn good stuff. Gritty thrashy hardcore punk with a definite metallic edge, and pretty sick vocals, it reminds me of bands like Groundwork and Econochrist in parts.

In case you've downloaded this and are wondering where the scans of the insert are... there aren't any scans. The insert is poster-format, so it is too big for my scanner, sorry! One side is an Albrecht Durer woodcarving, thankfully one which isn't used too often by hardcore bands (this one). The other side has the usual stuff: lyrics (to 2 of the 4 tracks, Die Like Them and The Long March), a thanks list, general information, and a cryptic message that the lyrics to the other 2 songs are too whiny to show. BTW, since there was also a rather good hardcore band called Bound from New Jersey in the '90s, I added the 'MA' to the title. I might just put up some Bound (NJ) material at some point, you never know!

Thanks for the link to the figure four collection. I have most on vinyl but don't have an operational turntable anymore.

There were a few unreleased Bound songs(I remember "Triplet" being on of them) which *may* have been recorded at Justin(guitar)'s Dad's studio. Hatchetface recorded 4 or 5 tunes post-Vo.II, including a Bloodbath cover("Save My Strength")sans vocals, as Paul seemed to have lost intereest in the whole thing.
We had fun with that shit. I can't believe none of us had heard Poison Idea's "Kings of Punk" at that point, hearing Vol.II now, it sounds so influenced by the PI record.
Thanks for posting this shit,
-Matt

I actually have a tape that I got from Justin years ago with the 7" sessions on it that includes Triplet, Killeon Church and the re-done Cain Rose up. Got the demo too, wish I had a way to get it digital. Matt needs to up the Pressure Point stuff that was killer as well. - EC

I didn't lose interest in the band... I was turned off by the sycophant aristocracy that was created as certain musicians developed their ego along with their talents. That was no fun. I was told the drummer was making way for the girl who took his v card was going to replace me on the mic. That part was super interesting for me! Hehe!

I also remember losing interest in someone's favorite pet sycophant getting the privelage of letting a few hundred blue vinyl VOL IIs melt in his car... that kind of stuff was so fun. Blogs... who knew? All these years later.

Oh well, sorry for being mindlessly nasty in the previous comments I made and would like to remove- but... I am genuinely sorry. The misunderstanding- an epic misunderstanding that defies probability and logic, and can't be given closure by assigning fault or blame- caused some ill sentiment that should just be transcended and... chalked up to the weirdness of improbability. Either way, for one of the few records, I just want to be clear- trying to go to college, and trying to do HF, and having a family tragedy where- anyone remember what happened at Hampton Beach to my *#!$3*, and as a result, an assailant got 8 years in prison? I never lost an appreciation for playing the music, the songs everyone wrote for me to sing to, and all the parts that mattered. I've just heard so many reductions, so many reductive, over simplified, descriptions of how or why I "lost interest," and often from people I really don't even remember meeting. Raver... when there was still a band, I believe I went to 3 or 4, and I was running into people who played in the same bands we played with, or were common to the hardcore scene in MA. I may have been to ten? Every one with broader TCHC faces... It's still hard to even draw a distinction since it was associating with the same people I went to hardcore shows with, played them with, or would see at either place, but... I understand answering things with simple projections and answers... it happens. If anyone would have asked my how/why Hatchet Face "broke up," from when it happened right up until weird speculative ideas about my role began to force me to really, really think about it, I always would have said- one day we just played a last show and never practiced again. That's it. Then if someone asked me, why do you think that happened? I'd say, everyone else had at least one other band, and maybe that was enough for the other guys. That's all. Anyway, sorry for posting mean tempered comments. Now that the misunderstanding that made it so there would be no earthly reason for us to figure out there even was a misunderstanding took a toll for sure, and I don't mean to excuse my tone in the previous comments... I just never understood what I was feeling in the distant, fractured, absent, spoiled "relationship." I'm sorry, but... I hold those days and the people associated with them very warmly, and I'm grateful for anyone who enabled or supported my experience of TCHC. There's some tragic stuff mixed in there... least of it, some unfinished songs, but from my first show ever at Club 490, to the last one I played with Hatchet Face which was also at Club 490, nothing can tarnish how I look back on all those people and times... I don't believe anyone under 25 has any real idea about the significance or insignificance of what they're doing... what it means... jason-frontal-lobe-ulation-formation. Anyway, sorry, thank you, and be well!
Sincerely -Paul.

If anyone is reading this, the original BOUND studio reels have been found (after a very long search for the above-mentioned "Scarlett")... Missing songs will be released soon, stay tuned!!!

XhcnoirX said...

That is awesome news! Please keep us posted, I would love to hear those reels!!!

Unknown said...

I hope this is true as I am the "Scarlett" poster, tape was lost due to personal issues. the real missing gem was the unreleased tapes sans vocals post hatchetface tapes justin would play in the car. 10 levels down didn't compare to those tracks. Put that Shit out!
